Servants #8—Praised by Servants

Whoever serves, let him do so by the strength which God supplies; so that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belongs the glory and dominion forever and ever. 1 Peter 4:11

Gracious God, over a billion people around the world, millions across the nation, thousands in our states, and hundreds in our towns serve our communities and one another in the name of Jesus. You dispense extravagant gifts to us, place us in just the right place to use these gifts, and empower us through your Spirit so our gifts will be employed in just the right way to accomplish the goal you had in mind: the growth of the Body of Christ. You gave the word that comforted the dying, and the gospel witness that brought life to the dead. You stirred the hearts of those who supported missionaries, and opened the eyes of those who went to reap your harvest. You guided Dorcas’ hands, gilded Apollos’ tongue, and guarded Timothy’s ministry. Courage and vision, inspiration and hope, wisdom and love abound among your people as we serve. Best of all, you gave us One who came not to be served, but to serve. A master minister. A marvelous mentor. Anticipating great joy he laid aside his glory and took the form of a servant. He challenged us to follow his example. He convinced us that just as you were with him, showing him what to do, so he would send the Spirit to be with us, to teach us how to imitate you, the Only God who works for those who wait for him. Amen.
