Where bitter jealousy and selfish ambition exist in your heart, there is disorder and every evil thing. But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, unwavering, without hypocrisy. James 3:14–17
Foolishness produces chaos, which becomes a breeding ground for evil. Not the thoughtless foolishness we associate with “mistakes,” but the calculating foolishness of fearful pride and self-centered self-exaltation. We often label this kind of foolishness “wisdom” because we think it will get us ahead at the expense of those around us. However, when we disguise delusions of grandeur as self-esteem, meekness disappears and beneficence vanishes. Thinking that our limited ability to foresee and control the future will enable success, we disregard all that God offers in fellowship with him. Disregard for the promises of God drives us to demonic lifestyles. But when our behavior proceeds from our faith in Jesus’ promises and instructions, a wholly different environment evolves. Instead of the irrational unpredictability of chaos, we create a systemic flow of harmony. Because his wisdom satisfies us, we become contented, fearless and humble. When we order our lives according to heavenly wisdom, our ability to relate patiently and reasonably and graciously to others goes a long way toward allaying their fear that we might devour them. Because we are convinced God is for us for our good, we will live with commitment and integrity, creating an orderly world for ourselves and for those around us.
O God, who ordered the world through your wisdom, extend your orderliness through me as I live according to the wise and loving commands I have through Jesus, my Lord. Amen.
