Thanksgiving Sonnet—A Day Is Not Enough

Always rejoice, constantly pray, in everything give thanks. For this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. 1 Thessalonians 5:16–18

O Lord, we set aside this day to say
That we rejoice in all that you have done;
With love and joy we’ve only just begun
To celebrate your gracious resumé.
Indeed, a day is not enough to say
How really glad we are that you’ve outdone
Yourself again this year, as any one
Of us can easily and readily assay:
For families and friends, and even foes,
For creativity, both yours and ours,
For beauty and surprises that delight,
For patience with us when our hearts take flight
To land on distant, barren, lonely shores;
For all your love, as with our thanks we close.
