God has composed the body—giving more abundant honor to the members which lacked—so that there should be no division in the body, but that the members should have the same care for one another. 1 Corinthians 12:24-25
We can be selfish in two ways, a good way and a bad way. As we disbelieve this promise that God will use us for the good of all his people, we could try to use different individuals as means to our own advancement; or we could hoard the resources God has given us; or we could attempt to short-change others, so we will be certain of obtaining what we need. Of course, this puts us in deadly competition with all the other members of our community: Either we will win and they will lose; or they will win and we will lose. The odds are staggeringly high against us. On the other hand, by believing this promise, we can begin to serve those God has connected to us. We understand that in a community where each member cares for all the members, every one of us will have more than enough, for our God is extravagant in his supply. The competition consists solely in outdoing one another in honor. Each of us would be for them and each of them for us. Everyone would win because God has stacked the odds in everyone’s favor.
O Amazing Creator, your design is beyond compare, your wisdom beyond equal! Conform me to your design; enliven me with your wisdom; create a selfish servant’s heart in me. Amen.
