Thanksgiving Prayer 2014 — The Grateful Gaze

Oh give thanks to Yahweh; call out in his name; make known his deeds among the people … Give thanks to Yahweh for he is good; for his extravagant kindness is forever. 1 Chronicles 16:8, 34

Today we gaze into the past at all
The kindnesses extended by your grace;
The history of charity recall
To all the members of the human race:
In the beginning we were face to face
With you and walked in daily fellowship;
Then, even when we hid in sin’s disgrace,
You did not sever our relationship.
You patiently exerted  leadership
Preparing earth for Jesus’ ministry:
With love he offered his companionship
If we would turn from self-idolatry.
So now with grateful hearts we turn to face
The future filled with portents of more grace.

    Thanks for sending these every year Dad! I love the way you capture theology in poem.

    Can you clarify why “recall” is not “recalls” in, “The history of charity recall / To all the members of the human race”?

    Love, Morgan

      Glad you enjoyed it … The subject of the verb “recall” is the “we” of the first line; the phrase “The history of charity” is the object of that verb. I grant it’s a little awkward; sometimes poetry requires bending the rules – just a bit.
