Yahweh, who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and the vegetation, who gives breath to the people on it, declares. … “I am the Eternally Faithful One, that is my name; I will not give my glory to another.” Isaiah 42:5–8
Comfort rests in the arms of confidence, and confidence resides in the heart of certainty—certainty concerning God’s extraordinary kindness and his righteousness. According to our Creator’s declaration, we can be utterly certain that he is committed to maintaining and manifesting the fullness of his glory. His reputation depends on it. How full is his glory? Extravagantly, exquisitely, exotically full! The angels around his throne unceasingly proclaim that the vastly beautiful complexity of creation is the expression of his glory. It is evidence that he is holy, that he has infinite, unexcelled, and irreplaceable worth. How glorious must be the One who by his self-generating power and according to his infinite wisdom made everything and everyone. Even more, he is the One who sustains and governs it all without experiencing any loss to himself. Therefore, we can be confident that no created being will ultimately succeed in any activity that is intentionally or accidentally at odds with God’s purpose. If we are confident that God is in control of all that he created, we can experience contentment and comfort, especially while we’re in unfamiliar, dangerous situations. He who engaged to act as our deity will always be faithful to us because he has always been faithful to himself.
Loving Creator, by your command I exist, by your power I endure, in your glory I exult. Sustain my heart so I can live in sync with your wise and benevolent purposes for your glorious creation.
