Trials #2—Available Escape

No test has ever come upon you but such as is common to humanity. And God is faithful: He will not allow you to be tested beyond your ability, but with the trial will also provide the way of escape, so that you will be able to endure. For this very reason, my beloved, flee from idolatry. 1 Corinthians 10:13–14

When Israel escaped from Egypt, God led them into situations that tested their confidence and commitment to him. These situations especially tested their confidence that he was willing and able to fulfill his promises. They encountered these trials as a community and as individuals; each person had a choice to make; and the choices were clear. The burden of decision did not rest differently on any one person’s shoulder. Common, ordinary people had the opportunity to make simple, clear-cut selections. Their faith and faithfulness were tested in each situation: “Will you manifest your confidence in and commitment to God by following his directions? Yes or no?” The circumstances in our lives today are only different in time and place, not in substance. The question of whether or not we will trust God to provide for our future is the same. And, of equal importance, God’s provision of a clearly discernible path to that future is also the same. No dilemma is too obscure, enigmatic, or mysterious. God understands the choices we face because he created the situation, and each circumstance comes with its own unique solution matrix. The way through to joy will become clear, step by step, as we follow Jesus in the obedience of faith.

Gracious God, grant me the courage to run away from what is worthless and toward the goodness and glory you offer.
