God’s Presence #4—Present In The Valley

Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil; for you are with me. Your rod and staff comfort me. You prepared a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anointed my head with oil. My cup overflows. Surely goodness and extraordinary kindness will pursue me all the days of my life. And I will dwell in I AM’s house forever. Psalm 23:4–6

Remembering how the Lord has brought us through difficulties can fuel the courage we need to face anything, regardless of the danger. The psalmist remembered at least how God had provided food and supplies to him as he endured a difficult, life-threatening experience. He remembered that he had been treated as an honored guest by his heavenly host. So he concluded that during his earthly life, God would continue to pursue him with goodness and extraordinary kindness in the immediate future, and afterward would receive him into permanent fellowship. Jesus, the Great Shepherd of the sheep, walked through many dangerous valleys and the Father was always there for him. He knows every treacherous cliff and shadowy path. He knows the enemies that hide in ambush. Because he loves his sheep, he will not abandon us. The Spirit with whom he has anointed us will remain with us, and feed us from the table of Christ’s gracious death and resurrection. Our cup will overflow; we will always have exactly what we need. Best of all, we will finish our journey and enjoy God’s hospitality forever.

Lord Jesus, thank you for making me your sheep and always providing what I need. In the darkness of the shadow, help me to remember that you know the way and are protecting me.
