Courage #4—Victorious Courage

These things I have spoken to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world. John 16:33

Here is another reminder of what is possible for us when we are faithful to Jesus and retain his words in our hearts. We can be courageous as we consider that Jesus fought and won the same mental and spiritual battles we must fight and win. He was tested in every way we are tested, yet he remained faithful; he did not sin. He encountered ridicule for his confidence in a God he could not define or manipulate. He encountered resistance to the good news of the establishment of his kingdom. He encountered rottenness at every level of his culture. Because he trusted the Father’s glorious promises, wise counsel and powerful control over the events of history, he overcame this tribulation. The world was wrong about all that is important. Because of Jesus’ victory, sin is now defined in terms of faith in him. Righteousness is verified by his resurrection. And judgment is certified in the condemnation of Satan. Paul summarized it: “The life I now live I live because of the faithfulness of the Son of God who loved me and gave his life for me.” Thus Jesus promised that he will help us win these encounters, if we abide in him and imitate his faith. By the power of his Spirit, he will enable our faith, loyalty, and righteousness, so that his victory is ours as well.

Risen Savior, your promises to overcomers are overwhelming. As I face trials today, let me see clearly the empty cross and the empty tomb. Let me remember our union so I can fully enjoy your peace. Amen.
