“Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be frightened, for I am your God. Certainly I will strengthen you, I will help you, and I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. …” says the Eternal, even your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel. Isaiah 41:10 &14
God could hardly be more emphatic about why we should be courageous in contentious and confusing times. The depth of the darkness of the shadow in the valley does not matter. We can walk boldly and courageously as we follow Christ. When the stormy winds of change and calamity swirl, we can be sure-footed like mountain goats on high places; we can sleep peacefully like Jesus’ did on the deck of the boat in Galilee. Such courage is possible as we consider the threefold promise of God’s presence: he does not leave us alone, nor does he leave us with just anyone. He himself is with us in all the fullness of his eternal wisdom and power. His supernatural strength will sustain our hearts. The help he provides will be perfectly appropriate, and he will be righteous in how he accomplishes our deliverances, for they will accord with his commitment to maintain and display his glory as he fulfills his obligations to his people. The certainty of the thrice repeated promise is sealed with three encouraging names: the Eternal—Fountain of Life, Redeemer—Closest Kinsman Savior, and the Holy One of Israel—Israel’s Most Valuable Benefactor.
Lord Jesus, in the midst of the turmoil of society, cause me to remember you are with me. When I hesitate, cause me to remember I have your strength. In the dark, cause me to see the glory of your goodness and love. Amen.
