Facets of Salvation #6—Answered Prayer

Until now you have asked for nothing in my name; ask and you will receive, so that your joy may be full. John 16:24

There is no other name, under heaven, given to us, on which our salvation properly depends. So there is no other name than Jesus’ that will gain us access to God’s throne when we need mercy and timely grace. For when Jesus left the glorious fellowship of heaven to be born as a humble human, he was motivated by his love for the Father. When he went to the cross so the Father could remain just while forgiving and justifying repentant sinners, his love for the Father was clear. The Father delights in his Son’s reputation because the Son’s reputation is that he totally delights in the Father and his gracious purpose for his creation. Having a reputation like this gives Jesus instant access to the Father, who knows that his Son will always act in a way consistent with his design for creation. But this was not true of us. Before Jesus began to save us, our name was not music to God’s ears. Now, however, as we trust in Jesus, we are united to him; and he has given us permission to use his name when we approach the Father in prayer. We too can expect him to hear our prayers and to work to fill our lives with joy as he meets our needs. Being of benefit to us honors his Son’s work of bringing thousands of former enemies into the range of his overflowing grace.

Creator God, grant me wisdom as I pray and open my eyes so I can see and rejoice as you honor Jesus’ name with your answers. Amen.
