Blessed are those who endure testing, because, having become trustworthy, they will receive the crown of life, which God promised to those who love him. James 1:12
When God created human beings, he crowned us with glory and majesty, making us just a little lower than himself as he commissioned us to subdue and govern the wild world he made for us. But, fearful that he might be holding out on us, we have tried to go our own way. We valued our own wisdom and abilities more than his. When tested by obstacles and difficulties, we foolishly failed to entrust our futures to him and came face to face with the reality of death. But Jesus appeared and opened a way to be reconciled with our creator. Even better, when we pledge allegiance to him, he gives us the Holy Spirit, who makes us certain of the love God expressed for us in the death and resurrection of Jesus. Therefore, Jesus says, “Do not fear what you are about to suffer. You will be tested and you will have tribulation. Be faithful, even to death, and I will give you the crown of life. When you overcome, you will not be hurt by the second death.” We can even go beyond not fearing. We can exult in the tribulations of life because the various trials we experience are opportunities to persevere in our love for God and our confidence that he will work for our good. Then as we persevere, our faith and love increase until we are all that God meant us to be.
May I fight the good fight, finish my course, and keep the faith, so that we, righteous Lord, can celebrate together the righteousness of loving you.
