Thus says the Eternal, who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and the vegetation, who gives breath to the people on it. … “I am the Eternal, that is my name; I will not give my glory to another.” Isaiah 42:5-8
Comfort rests in the arms of confidence; and confidence resides in the heart of certainty — certainty concerning God’s gracious righteousness. According to the Creator’s declaration, we can be completely certain that he is committed to maintain and manifest the fullness of his glory. How full is his glory? Extravagantly, exquisitely, exotically full! The angels around his throne proclaim that the vastly beautiful complexity of creation is the expression of his glory, evidence that he is holy: having infinite, unexcelled and irreplaceable worth. How glorious must be the One who by his self-generating power made everything and everyone; even more, he is the One who sustains and governs it all, without experiencing any loss to himself. Therefore we can be confident that no created being will ultimately succeed in any activity intentionally or accidentally at odds with God’s purpose. If we are confident that God is in control, we can experience contentment and comfort, especially while we’re in unfamiliar, dangerous situations; and apart from the presence and protection of those who love us. We can relax, remembering that God will always BE God!
Loving Creator, by your command I exist, by your power I endure, in your glory I exult. Tune my heart to live in sync with your wise and benevolent purposes for your glorious creation.
