Goodness #7 — Long Lasting Good

The Eternal is good. His extravagant kindness is everlasting, and his faithfulness to all generations. Psalm 100:5

Our patience runs out. Our loyalty decays. Our generosity withers. Our mercy delays. Our devotion dies down. Our compassion goes flat. Our graciousness dwindles. Our lives are like that. God’s is not! From eternity to eternity, God is good. Jesus Christ, the Son who lived among us “doing good,” is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Through the Spirit we continually receive good gifts and guidance. This means that when God makes promises, we can count on him to keep them. The extravagant kindness which moves him to enter covenant relationships with us is everlasting. His eternal desire is to be benevolent to his people. He will rejoice of us to do us good, with all his heart and soul. But this “beyond all you can ask or think” graciousness is only a part of the way he relates to us. He is not just passionately kind, he is faithful. He relates as deity to the living, not the dead; so he is resurrection-faithful: He is still the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. He is righteously faithful as well, for Jesus took on himself the wrath of God, in order that in the ages to come we will experience the surpassing riches of his grace — forever.

Thank you for such a hopeful declaration, O Lord. May I remember this great truth in the moments I am most inclined to give up. Amen.
