If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him? Luke 11:13
No human parent loves perfectly. They are not always eager to do the very best for their children. There is an evil in them which often keeps them centered on themselves. On the whole, however, when asked for the necessities of life, such as food and clothing and shelter, they do pretty well. They may discipline because they want their kids to become mature, responsible adults. But even at their best, they must struggle to overcome their evil inclinations. Our Heavenly Father knows no such struggle! He is infinitely more eager to do good for us than our parents. When we ask him, he gives. When we come to Jesus’ Abba, we come not to a stern, reluctant, stingy “Old Man,” but to a happy, eager, generous “Dad.” He is the one of whom Jesus said, “Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has chosen gladly to give you the kingdom.” Even more, what he gives us is infinitely better than any good our parents give. For he promises us himself, the ultimate good and the source of every other good gift we ever receive.
Heavenly Father, how I want your love: the love you share in the Trinity, and the love you extend to us. Pour your Spirit into my heart and life as Jesus said, and fill me with your good. Amen.
